Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

KVM switching

I have a KVM switch for switching between my Windows and Unbuntu PCs. However, the hotkey sequence of pressing Scroll Lock twice only works when switching from Windows to Linux - not the other way round.

Strangely, I have plugged another USB keyboard straight into the Linux machine and the Scroll Lock function works fine! The rest of the keyboard functionality works OK so why not the Scroll Lock sequence? Thanks.

In general, KVM switches should work fine. Regardless of whether you're running Windows, Linux ... or even DOS or Win9x (trust me - I do all of the above). But, unfortunately, there are exceptions.

If you're buying a USB KVM, then try to make sure it supports "USB mice". That's usually a good indicator it'll work with Linux.

Q: What manufacturer and model is your KVM switch?

This is my KVM:

The mouse/keyboard connections are USB rather than PS2 and my mouse works fine on both PCs while connected through the switch. In fact, the keyboard works fine too in all respects other than the double Scroll Lock thing not working. It's really odd (and frustrating!).

I have just discovered by accident that a double press of Num Lock works great on both machines. This is not a documented feature but works none the less! Why Num Lock works on Ubuntu but not Scroll Lock is still a mystery!

EGLF24 - Thanks! This is just what I was searching for. My new Logitech Illuminated Keyboard has a FN key that had to be held to turn scroll lock on and off (the Trendnet KVM switch hot key), and that didn't work on my Linux Distro (Linux Mint).
