kvm external power vs usb
Are externally powered kvm switches less problematic than usb powered?

For this I'm talking vga.

Generally yes, maybe a little, or no difference at all, any info would be very appreciated.

Thank you,

I've got a 4-way USB powered KVM, you switch between the four systems with hot keys; <scroll lock><scroll lock><Port No. 1 to 4><Return> It looks like a cable mounted box with four tails.
Most of the time it works fine but on boot I can get a "No Keyboard connected" message and have to power cycle the selected system to pick it up.
I'm not sure where it picks the power up from, I assumed it was the VGA rather than the USB connection. N.B. only one USB connection to the system, keyboard & mouse have individual connectors to the KVM.

You can get passive KVMs, Belkin do them as do others, where you have to use a cable mounted switch to select the system (on a two port one anyway)

Hope this helps.

Thanks for helping Soadyheid,

I've seen the basic models advertized that require the remote switch be used. At first I thought they would be completely 100% manual and would obviously be less problamatic (on average) and perfect for me.

But then I started thinking that even thou that type doesn't have a built in brain to handle keyboard switching, it still uses the usb power to actually flip the circuitry? The "manual" switch is the chooser but still needs power to function, it doesn't physically transfer the circuitry? Does this questioning make sense?

I wish I knew for sure, if you or anyone does, that info alone would suffice for me. I only need a basic 2 port.

Sounds like you want the passive one with the cable mounted switch. I think there is obviously a little power used but unlike the active one which has to decode the hot-key strokes, the circuitry will be pretty basic and therefore more reliable.

Thanks Soadyheid,

Your thinking is sound, I'll just do that, for 24 bucks or what have you it ain't gonna kill me either way. Everything nowadays is virtual, but i figured there would be some old timers or something with a bunches of left over experience with kvm's. In particular about external vs internal power.

Thanks again,
