Have a look at ESR's `Smart Questions' (GIYF). Which sound-emitting programs have you tried? Try some other ones. Which sound systems/daemons/... have you tried (Alsa, OSS, esd, jackd, artsd, ...)? Try some other ones. Try playing back a different file (just in case). Are there *any* program which emits sound? Does the PC speaker emit sound? If applicable, does your joystick and/or midi keyboard work?

This should get you started --Jonas

couple of things here. for one, a LOT of linux cd sound stuff requires analog sound. this means you'll need an extra cable going from your cd rom drive into your motherboard. they cost about 50c i'd say.

secondly, try the following:

as root, do this:

alsamixer

this brings up the alsa mixer where you can adjust several sound settings. turn up the master and pcm volumes to 100%. press Ctrl-C to get out of this. then try for sound again. if not, try doing the following as root:

rcalsasound restart

i'm not sure, but some media types are streaming audio so they load a certain amount of the song before playing it, (like on the web) so maybe it has to do this. I probably am 100% wrong about this btw!!!
