Maybe, check out Aussie's thread in Linux General about the new support in 2.4.19. The newer 333 boards have I think its an southbridge chip that didn't have proper support in 2.4.18. It'll install, but flake out a lot, so you can install Mandy, SuSe, RH, Slack, Deb 3.0, all of which shipped recently with 2.4.18 and then compile a fresh 2.4.19 and be fine.
Aside from that, integrated components, video, sound the usual culprits are sometimes a crapshoot. Post back here in hardware when you've narrowed to a specific board and we can give you a good idea.
thanks for the info. will probably get the abit kg7 raid board, found it for $70, cheap. the amd 761 is no slouce, and i really do think theres that much difference between the amd 761 and kt333, maybe 6 fps in games.
AMD761/VIA686B have been supported for ages, well past the bug ridden stage.
The Highpoint Controller is a HPT370, I've got one of these, works great under 2.4.18+19.
This is just a solidly supported no integrated frills board, looks like a real good one. I dig Abit too, sometimes panned on Tom's for being pokey'er, but I haven't had one blow up yet, even under stupid circumstances.
yup, the amd 761 works well with linux systems. i have downloaded red hat , suse and mandrake, slackware with no problems at all.
i wanted to get the abit kg7-r because i have 2 gig ga-7dxr and 7dxr+ boards, i fried the dxr with my processor the other day. reason was i used thermal tape on the heatsink, quess it,s used mostly for memory heatsinks. am i ticked,$270 just fried in front of me .

Luck on the new system,

Allrighty then. . . I've been looking at the A-bit KD7-E. I'm just looking for a simple setup (no raid). Are there any issues with kernel 2.4.21 with this board and ATA 133?
