Question kpackage error ??? newbie

I am running the mepis linux 2004 the came with point and click linux book ,so far after following the instructions I have been unsuccessful in installing one single piece of software , have tried abiword , libcairo2 , nvidia-glx , and others . I have run the apt update as well as the upgrade with no luck in solving this issue . Most common error is "unable to early remove efsprogs" . Anyone with answers in this area has my sincere thanks in advance . Package format deb , I believe this is correct.
