Unhappy knoppix 4.0.2 not compatible ATI or nvidia

Hello I'm relative linux newbie havinga terrible time getting knoppix to detect or install any harware especially video cards tried both ati 9550 and nvidia mx 4000 agp 8x Ati will run but poorly under vesa, ati and radeon knoppix says it reconises the mx 4000 as a mx 440 8x agp on boot screen and lspci says Nvidea corp NV18 [GeForce4 Mx 4000 agp 8x]when I use cheat code to load nividia rather than the (nv) server iget mod probe fatal error inserting apm and no suitable x-server found for your card .both these cards run fine under SUse and the nvidia runs great so there is no problem with the linux 2.6.12 kernal running the nvidia with or with out nvidia drivers the problem seems to be specific to Knoppix I tried Debian 3.1 as well and got no gui at all.Am I just plain running the wrong cards has anyone found a card under $120 that works with knoppix?Although the rest of hardware detection is terrible too no flash no foppy no usb hard drive etc.Suse reads them all right out of box with no setup but my gprs performance is marginal.
