KMS not working, screen turns blank. Intel i3 330 Integrated Graphics

Hi

I have a problem with the i915 intel driver's modesetting. With modesetting enabled, the screen turns blank. I have tried to compile the driver built in, as a module and modesetting both enabled by default and disabled by default (tested with X).

I have tried kernel 2.6.36-r5 and 2.6.37. None of them works. The 2.6.36-r5 kernel reported an error that the bios didn't allocate any shadow GTT. This seems to work using the 2.6.37 kernel:
Code:
[ 0.640518] agpgart-intel 0000:00:00.0: Intel HD Graphics Chipset
[ 0.640760] agpgart-intel 0000:00:00.0: detected gtt size: 524288K total, 262144K mappable
[ 0.641823] agpgart-intel 0000:00:00.0: detected 131072K stolen memory, trimming to 32768K
[ 0.666859] agpgart-intel 0000:00:00.0: AGP aperture is 256M @ 0xc0000000
I've also tried using both 32bit and 64bit linux. I'm currently using Gentoo 2.6.37 kernel x86_64.

This is the dmesg output from when I load module i915 or start X. It looks to me like everything is fine here.

I have modesetting enabled. I don't think that it is my kernel config that is wrong. At this point I have no idea what's wrong, but the dmesg output looks ok. I've tried with both the 2.13 and the 2.14 xf86-video-intel versions.

I use i915.modeset=1 as a boot flag and build the i915 driver as a module with modesetting disabled by defaut in the kernel config so that I'm able to boot up without getting a blank screen early in the bootup process. I've also tried every option with modesetting enabled or disabled or i915 build in or build as module without any luck.

What could be the problem?

Update: After some more research, it looks like the problem is that the monitor is not giving the correct EDID information. I still haven't found a solution.

First, add some HorizSync and VertRefresh options to xorg.conf, based on your monitor manual.

Also, see:

The manual doesn't give me that information. Only that it is a 13.3" screen with resolution 1366x768. It's a Sony Vaio laptop VPCY21AFX [Sony's esupport].

I don't think it's a MTRR issue, as this should be ignored when PAT is enabled?

When I tried to connect an external monitor to the laptop's VGA port I got graphics on the external monitor.

This line indicated something with MTRR:
Code:
[ 671.440511] [drm] MTRR allocation failed. Graphics performance may suffer.
However, even if this were true, graphics would still work.

Just specify a reasonable range or set xorgconfig or xorgsetup or X --config configure it. If the manual doesn't specify a range, I would ask $ony.

When i tried nouveau/kms for the first time, my screen went blank too.
I hadn't enabled "FIRMWARE_EDID" option because the description says
that it is needed if DDC/I2C doesn't work, so i thought it is not needed.
But the screen works only with this option enabled.

The cause in your case might be different, but check if FIRMWARE_EDID
is enabled in your .config.

Yes it is. .config I forgot to include it in the original post
