keyboard lost up & down arrows? (gnome only)

i know this sounds stupid, but i've suddenly lost my up and down arrows on the keyboard within gnome -- although side to side works find.

they just don't seem to be recognized, command history, navigation, whatever.

this problem doesn't affect CLI or KDE.

any ideas?
