Keyboard and mouse are not working on Scientific linux 6

I am using Scientific linux 6 ,
I boot to the cli and type
#startx
The GUI starts but the keyboard and mouse are not working .
Every thing was working well 2 days ago and then I switched off the PC .
When I tried to switch on the PC today , I found the keyboard was working only on the cli mode but neither the keyboard nor the mouse are working on the GUI mode .
Any suggestions on how to get everything working back ?

Check the contents of your "Xorg.<display nbr>.log" file (e.g. "/var/log/Xorg.0.log")

Sorry, too lazy to read your logfile.
Do you see in it anything related to your mouse or keyboard?
Any errors? ("EE")

I boot to the cli and type

WHY?

that is not the DEFAULT for SL6.6
booting to the login screen with GDM is the default ,unless it is a headless server without having X11 installed

set /etc/inittab and change that 3 to a 5
Code:
id:5:initdefault:
is this mouse a parallel port wired mouse? ( the green round port in the back of the computer)?
or
a wired USB mouse?
OR
a wireless parallel port ( an adaptor that pluges into the back of the computer)?
or
a wireless usb ( a tiny usb plug) ?

the same thing as above goes for the keyboard

instead of typing in "startx" have you tried "gdm" ?

as to WHAT changed 2 days ago ?
did you install updates ?
there have been a lot lately ( just the other day there ware a few )

1)on writing :
# id:5:initdefault
I got
- bash: id:5:initdefault: command not found

2) I am using a wireless mouse ( wireless usb ) and wireless usb keyboard too .

3) #gdm:
gives
** (gdm-binary:7857): WARNING**: Couldn't connect to system bus : Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory .

4) The last two days the computer was switched off and I didn't do any thing nor installed any updates ..
It was working well before switching it off and once I turned it one , the mouse and keyboard refused to respond on the GUI ..

So, What do you think I shall do ?

Thanks in advance

The line related to input devices is :

[ ] (II) The Server relies on HAL to provide the list of input devices .
If no devices become available, reconfigure HAL or disable AutoAddDevices

There is no special line for mouse and keyboard !

I don't see any errors in the log file

What do you think I shall do ?

Thanks
