kernel won't get past partition check? help!

For some reason my 2.4.30 kernel just can't get through past this point:

Code:
partition check:
sda
ATA: command 0xc8 timeout, stat 0x0d last stat 0x1
ATA: status 0x0d { Busy }
SCSI disk error....
What could be going wrong? This is a SCSI SATA disk.

That looks like either a problem with the SATA chipset or a failing hard drive to me. SATA works much better under 2.6 though. What did you change, if anything, just before this problem started occuring?
