Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init

Hi all,

i have a question regarding the installation of the redhat 8.0 and 9.0 distribution. When i install the distribution i have no problem. No error message.... but when i want to use it i have an error message: "Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init ".

I don't know why i have got this message. I have no problem with the redhat 7.3 distribution (just with 8.0 and 9.0 of the redhat) or the others distribution as mandrake.

Could you help me. I am a newbie on linux. Thanks!

Fanche

init is that program wich on boot will start all the other programs ie webserver, ftpserver, login promt, x, kde and such thing. It always has processnumber 1 (a usefull thing to know, sometimes) and I belive, it is the last program to end when you stop your box. So any atempt to kill the process is clearly and error.

I got one too....

Hey Franche,
I just got a Kernel Panic: Attempted to kill init! on start up too, I'm not sure if you have resolved the problem, if you have I would be really grateful for some help, I googled "Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init" and I got a few interesting threads.
Mostly saying...

"A common reason is that /sbin/AP has a seg fault or some other faults. I would debug AP program in a stable environment and then make sure I can see the first "printf" from AP. From there, you can debug AP with printf."

Unfortunately my system has only Debian linux on, and Knoppix doesn't seem to want to work..... oh well I'll just try and switching it off and on again, usually works......
