Kernel ATA, IDE support

hi all,

here i come with a doubt about my kernel configuration. The utility lshw shows this output ragarding my hard drive:

Code:
*-disk
                   description: ATA Disk
                   product: FUJITSU MHU2100AT
                   vendor: Fujitsu
                   physical id: 0
                   bus info: ide@0.0
                   logical name: /dev/hda
                   version: 00000008
                   serial: NQ0CT5425KVT
                   size: 93GiB (100GB)
                   capacity: 93GiB (100GB)
capabilities: ata dma lba iordy smart security pm apm partitioned partitioned:dos
                   configuration: apm=off mode=udma5 signature=0000000a smart=on
it says it's an ATA disk.. i always thought it's an IDE, and this

Code:
        *-ide
             description: IDE interface
             product: 82801DBM (ICH4-M) IDE Controller
             vendor: Intel Corporation
             physical id: 1f.1
             bus info: pci@0000:00:1f.1
             version: 03
             width: 32 bits
             clock: 33MHz
             capabilities: ide bus_master
             configuration: driver=PIIX_IDE latency=0 module=piix
           *-ide:0
                description: IDE Channel 0
                physical id: 0
                bus info: ide@0
                logical name: ide0
                clock: 33MHz
refers to IDE. IDE is the channel and ATA is the actual hardware?
Then i got an ISA bridge (dont'know what it refers to) and an external USB HD wich seems to be SCSI. so now i'm quite confused about this hardware, and this is not a good point to start compiling a kernel, so every tip is very welcome..

forgot.. since it seems i have an IDE disk, why is the 'libata' running in the default kernel? is hould have no SATA disk..

Essentially ATA and IDE when talking about disks refer to the same thing.

SCSI is a different kind of disk.

Have a look at this for more detail:

Please read the Wikipedia article about ATA. It will tell you that ATA is an industry standard based on Western Digital's IDE interface. The two TLAs (Three Letter Acronyms) are used interchangeably in the twin worlds of hard drives and kernel drivers.

Hi,

I refer you to the 'libATA FAQ' along with 'Serial ATA (SATA) for Linux'.

These links and others can be found at 'Slackware-Links'. More than just SlackwareŽ links!
