Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Kernel 2.6.8-11-amd64-k8 and USB 320 GB

Hello,

I am running debian sarge AMD64
My kernel is:
Linux atlas 2.6.8-11-amd64-k8 #1 Mon Oct 3 00:29:51 CEST 2005 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I have an external HD Western Digital 250GB USB 2.0. I plug it as a single 250GB fat32 partition. This disk is detected as high speed USB external hard disk, and there is no problem with it.

I bought a external HD Western Digital 320GB USB 2.0. I plug it as a single 320GB ext3 partition. The system recognises it as a high speed USB external hard disk, but the system was not able to handle it properly. I always got IO errors and very low speed when transferring data to/from the 320GB.

However I made two partitions from the 320GB hard disk: 160 and 160GB (ext3), plug them to the system and everything is working perfectly now.

Does anybody know whether there is some problem regarding external USB hard disks sizes and the kernel 2.6.8-11-amd64-k8 ?

Should I upgrade to etch?

Thanks.
