Exclamation Kernel 2.6.5, hdparm dma, and AK72

Hello all,

I'm using slackware 9.1 with kernel 2.6.5. I'm trying to tweak my hard drive to perform better by using hdparm, but apparently I didn't compile something in the kernel that I needed to...

I'm using an AOpen AK72 motherboard (can't show the url...grr...just do a google search on AK72 and it's the phase out one) and a Maxtor 120 gig hard drive (I know, I know, eww). I recently switched from Debian to Slackware, and I think I missed some setting that I had in the kernel beforehand. When I do this:

root@galadriel:/# hdparm -d1 /dev/hda

I get this:

/dev/hda:
setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
using_dma = 0 (off)
root@galadriel:/#

This is not good. I don't want to enable random chipsets and quite frankly, when it comes to chipsets, I'm lost. All I know is that my (two) chipsets are VIA KX133 and VIA 686B.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Post bump and update

Got a bit of a problem: when doing hdparm -tT on the system, I get a fast cacheing, but as far as the read ahead, it's insanely slow (2-3 mb/sec, not good). This seems to be a consistant problem with the VIA stuff...ideas?

I think I might have it, but I won't be able to test until I get home today.
