Kernel 2.4 support for USB-to-IDE interface?

I'm considering buying an external chassis to mount an IDE harddisk in, and was thinking more specifically of one that supports USB 2.0 (I don't have firewire). So I found such a chassis that is USB2.0 to IDE compliant... at least the manufacturer wrote this on their website: **No Driver needed for Windows98SE, 2000, ME, XP and Mac OS,OSX, so it seems generic enough.

Does anyone know if there is support for the USB2.0 to IDE interface in Linux kernel 2.4.22?

AFAIK, there isn't any support for USB-to-IDE. However, I know there is USB Mass Storage support, through a sort of SCSI-emulation (like for ide-scsi). For instance, if the modules are loaded, my external CF reader shows up as /dev/sda.

Enable it, if it isn't already, by making your kernel configuration have these enabled:

<*> SCSI support
<*> SCSI disk support
<*> SCSI CD-ROM support
<*> SCSI generic support

<*> Support for USB
<*> USB Mass Storage support

And whatever else your machine needs to use USB devices (UHCI/OHCI/EHCI/YourMom'sHCI, whatever).

Hope I helped you.
