Kernel 2.4-18.26 and NVIDIA GeForce3

I just downloaded and installed (via up2date) the latest kernel (2.4-18.26) Redhat 8.0, Nvidia GeForce3. I was running the 2.4-18.24 kernel with NVIDIA's 1.0-4191 drivers successfully and enjoying UT2003. After the kernel update I can't start X windows (using the new kernel) at all.

I d/l and tried what I remembered (thinking the source would have to be rebuilt with the new kernel):

rpmbuild --rebuild NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4191.src.rpm
rpm -Uvh NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4191.i386.rpm

no luck. I know I modified my /etc/X11/XF86Config file changing the driver line from "nv" to "nvidia", but my XF86Config file still works with this kernel (2.4-18.24). Did I forget a step?
