Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

kernal panic

I have ubuntu 7.04 installed on my computer. When I boot up I get the following message."(17.578757) kernal panic- not syncing: VFS unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (0.0) (17.578820)" Is this repairable or should I reinstall. I am reluctant to do so as I would lose all my data. My computer has a 800mhz processor and 512 on Ram.
Thanks

Hi,

Did you recompile the kernel recently?

Have changed menu.lst or lilo.conf?

Usually that messages means that either you:

a) Have a bad root configured in your boot manager (grub or lilo)

b) Have recompiled the kernel and left out the support for ATA or S-ATA drivers (depends on what kind of hard disk you have)

You should check first the configuration of the boot manager's configuration file, verify the roots. Maybe you have something like hda2 when should be hda1 or have sda1 when it should be hda1 or something like it.

Regards
