Keeping peripheral designation constant

I have a computer running Debian Squeeze that contains a mixture of peripherals, two ATA hard discs, a SCSI controller handling an autoloader tape drive, one ide cdrom, a sata dvd writer. I just added a sata disc, and have gotten to the point of frustration. I did not mind when the cdrom and dvd switched designation back and forth between CD1 and CD0 (under grip). The autoloader, is identified either as SG0 or SG5 (when I use lsscsi -g), which causes problems with finding a static configuration for Bacula. Is there a configuration parameter to set that will allow all peripherals to have a standard generic designation so that no configurations have to be constantly changed?

Thank you.

To create consistent mount points, when plugging in external drives, you can create fstab rules, that use the UUID of the partition, rather than the device node, ie: /dev/sdx.

For consistent naming of the device node, you would need to create/modify the udev rules for that device, and force it to use the required name for the device/s.

http://wiki.debian.org/udev is a link from the Debian wiki, specifically the "Persistent Device name" section..
