keeping compiling kernel source in /usr/src after compile

Hi, i have installed fedora 7 x64 to my 8gb usb stick.
it has less space to use. I wanna compile my own kernel. do i have to put kernel source to /usr/src or can i compile kernel in guest host machine disk and install it with make install make modules_install?

you can compile it on a different machine... but you'd be better to build an RPM of the modified kernel and then install that instead of trying to copy across the compiled source and then doing a make install

then i dont have to have a kernel source in my /usr/src. i was thinking compiled modules were stayin at /usr/src. so i was afraid to delete any kernel there but i guess i was wrong
