The AMD K6-3 500Mhz is comparable to the P3. Try it, and if you have problems move to something more powerfull. But the K6-3 was initially made to compete with the P3, especially at the lower speeds like 500mhz

thanks, i'm trying to find a cpu for a socket 7 mb. so that's what i've found so far for the price that i would want to pay to upgrade.

old system for a firewall, got it for free and i think that i toasted the cpu. i was playing with the jumpers and now i can't get it to boot anything, not even a dos prompt.

it's good to see another minnesotian on the board. i'm down in st. paul.

thanks again.

Ya sure you betcha! Us minnesotants need to stick together!

If you are just using it as a firewall/router system, 500mhz is plenty. Unless you plan on having it serve a network with hundreds of computers. You might even notice small lag with 30+ users, but if this is for your house, 500mhz will be just fine.
