Jumpdrive Secure - password-protected partition problem
(I've looked at the numerous posts on Jumpdrives on this website, and I couldn't find one that addresses my specific problem).
I have Suse 9.3 Professional running KDE, and when I plug in my Jumpdrive Secure, it gets automatically mounted, plug-and-play style, no problems. What's NOT working is the software that came on the Public partition of the Jumpdrive that launches the password dialog window that lets me into the secure/encrypted partition.
Looking in the directory where the software is located (sda1/JDSecure/Linux), I have an "executable file" with a "gear" icon, called lxr_jds_31, in addition to two supporting files. Every effort I've made to execute that "executable file" has failed-- it does absolutely nothing. I'm still relatively a newbie to Linux, and I just don't "get it"-- why won't it run?
I have also tried using the same drive with Knoppix 4.0, and the exact same problem occurs, so I'm thinking this definitely isn't just a Suse thing.
I'm really hoping to make Linux my new desktop O/S at home, but a lot of what I do is on that Jumpdrive's secure partition, so successful adoption depends on solving this problem. Please help!
Is this one of the Lexar Media drives? If so, the security isn't up to much anyways, and for it's worth I couldn't get going under Linux whilst I was playing with one of them either. If you're serious about wanting to protect your data, there are other apps that don't simply password protect the partition, but encrypt the files, providing full protection including support for Windows/Linux/Mac so you can still move between OS'.
It's a Lexar Jumpdrive Secure. I just went out to Lexar's website and pulled the following from their product description: "The pre-loaded security software means that your information will be subject to password-protected 256-bit AES encryption." To me, it stands to reason that if they put a version of their security software on the Jumpdrive in a folder called Linux, it should work in Linux-- in turnkey fashion. Surely, somebody out there's gotten this thing to work by now? The product's been out for a few years.
BUT, if it won't work, it won't work. In that case, what multi-platform encryption software would you recommend? Preferably, open-source/gpl.
I'm also going to email Lexar and see if they can give any guidance. If they give a workable solution, I'll post it here for posterity.
