ISA modem not responding in Mandrake

I've just bought an ISA internal modem, chipset rcvdl56acf/sp. It is a hardware modem and it is detected and working fine in Knoppix 3.3 (The latest version of Knoppix at my disposal). The problem is it won't work in Mandrake 10 (kernel 2.6.3-7mdk).

'dmesg' says its detected:

Activating ISA DMA hang workarounds.
isapnp: Scanning for PnP cards...
isapnp: Card 'K56 SVD/SP'
isapnp: 1 Plug & Play card detected total

But I have tried ttyS0-3 and all of them say 'modem is busy. I have fiddled around with setserial and isapnptools but I don't really know what I'm doing and I thought the 2.6 kernel was meant to do this automatically. 'dmesg' also says that 'PNPBIOS: disabled' Would this have anything to do with the problem? please help as I don't want to have to install another distro to get 1 device working. Thanks
