Is there Anyway to get around CUPS for a Brother HL1240 laser in an Ubuntu based distro like Mint?

not that I'm aware, but that laser should work with the drivers supplied by brother.

check out this video if you like. Its for Linux Lite, which is also ubuntu (12.04) based.

Might be able to use some direct to printer if you can set emulation mode in the printer.
