Is there a way to add a driver for my dvd player?

My Acer Aspire 3680 has a Slimtype DVD C DS24 CZP DVD ROM/CDRW that doesn't work correctly. Is it possible to download a driver and use it for Linux?

Although DVD drives use firmware, drivers may work.
What's the problem with it, exactly? You may need codecs, not drivers.
What's the brand of the drive, also?

I believe Slimtype is the brand. It's not really specified anywhere. The drive will play CD's and DVD's, but refuses to burn CD's. I've tried every linux CD burner program with no luck.

Different brands of CD's used? I've had problems with different brands of CD's on my Sony DVD burner under Linux, that don't seem to occur under Windows.
