Is there a HW and SW certified configuration for Linux ?
Hi there,
Since 3 weeks, I try to make a Linux box on Mandrake 9.1 works with a mobo P4P800. I experienced a lot a problems and I wonder if MDK9.1 and P4P800 are compatible. The problems I have are the following : 1. the RAID controller VIA VT6410 is not recognize. Impossible to make it works, 2. the inboard 3COM GigaEthernet card is not working. I try a lot of workaround founded it this forum but noone is working. 3c2000 don't really works, sk98lin not much more, 3. Since I try to connect ADSL with a Speedtouch Alcatel USB modem, I got errors (see my other thread on this : ) indicating that perhaps USB is not well managed, 4. I've never heard a sound from the inboard AC'97 chip. It's not important for the moment so I don't try to make it works but I'm anxious about that. What can I do (other than putting the mobo and Linux in a trash) to solve all my problems ? - another kernel more récent (actually the 2.4.21-0.13mdkenterprise) ? - another Linux distro ? - another mobo ? If yes can you give one with RAID and USB compatibles controler. So, the question is following : is there any certified recent hw and recent sw configuration which run without any problems ? |
I know Red Hat maintains a hardware compatability list for each version of its distro. If you dig Mandrake, I suggest running a search on their home page for "hardware compatability list" and your version. I assume they maintain some kind of HCL.

your problems.
on your network card, and audio problem.
1. Goto ASUS.com and download the linux version of the drivers for your network card. It has instructions and a driver for installation, quite easy if you read and follow it correctly. 2. follow step one only for your audio device. Now for the part that has been driving everyone who owns a P4P800 DLX board mad. The via vt6410 has not been supported under linux (really) and they are currently testing a driver for release in about another week. This came from a via rep. " Thursday November 20, 2003 12:39 PM (NEW!) User is offline Send user a private message A new driver for VT6410/VT6420 Linux driver support is being tested at the moment. The ETA on releasing it is two weeks. Then an application note will be written ASAP. Hopefully we can post it for the November release. The V0.8 driver supports all OS distributions as it is released in a source building format. So it should support for the four OS we support now and also it does not restricet the CPU type. ------------------------- VIA Arena Team Web Media Liaison VIA Technologies, Inc." So it seems they will be releasing a compatible linux driver shortly. We can only hope. I have the same board and all of my products work except the vt6410 controller. They do not work out of the box you have to manually install the drivers yourself, do some research and it shouldn't be to hard. I still consider myself fairly new to linux, but as I ran into these problems that had to be fixed I did learn allot more about the whole O.S. Goodluck. P.S. If you still run into problems let me know I have some docs somewhere on installing these drivers. ;) |

What I was looking for, is a 100% full comptaible configuration to use in a professionnal way. Not something working but not really sure and not working on that case ... I was looking for something like you plug and you play. But at the moment, it was impossible for me to find something like that ! I wonder if all the LINUX user's have to make a lot of try or if I had not luck. I'm afraid that the answer is the first one. Is there any professional use of Linux on certified configuration ? I'm really gratefull with all people who are spending days and nights answering always the same questions, but their works should be more easier if somewhere a list of what works with what exists for Linux. By the way, I will try to do what you explain before. Quote:
I think it's not normal to sell something without all the Linux drivers working perfectly, or VIA have to say it explicitly (NOT LINUX COMPATIBLE). Is there any Linux associations which can make lobbying and go to the justice when some kind of problems arrive ? If not, I think it's missing. Thank's for all. P.S : sorry for my English. |
