Is screen rotation supported on ATI 9800 card?

Hello,

I am running Fedora 2.6.16-1.2122_FC5 and I am using an ATI 9800 video board. The following output is snipped from lspci:-

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R350 [Radeon 9800 Pro]
01:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R350 [Radeon 9800 Pro] (Secondary)

I have loaded the latest driver from livna (kmod-fglrx-8.24.8-1.2.6.16_1.2096_FC5.i686.rpm)and the board is working fine. I now get a frame rate of 5500 or over in glxgears where I got something abysmal (about 70?) with the default Fedora drivers.

I would now like to try to get the screen rotation working, but I have not been able to find any up to date info about this.

I googled quite a bit, but most of the replies seemed to be dated 2003/4.

Is this actually possible with this board under Linux?

BR

Mick

Video drivers are what control things like screen rotation. You might want to read up on the driver you are using. There is a configuration file for the driver, and you can set, or unset options. The default driver install installs the most common options, but there are optional options you might want to use. I'm am relatively sure screen rotation is one of these.

Suggestions for a video board to replace ATI 9800

OK,

I couldn't get a real handle on IF the ATI driver actually supports rotation at all.

Rather than try poking about with configuration options I thought that I would go directly to the horse's mouth, so to speak; I actually raised a technical enquiry ticket with ATI and simply asked if the new driver supports rotation.

I got a quick reply, but it was absolutely no use; some humbug to the effect "The driver is supplied 'as is'. Try asking the community".

This strikes me as a bit stupid, since if the writer of this closed source binary doesn't know what it can do, how is anyone else supposed to know without much dissasembling/debugging/playing?

I did not even ask HOW to do rotation, just if it was supported. If that's their attitude, then I will replace the card on principle.

So guys and gals, what is a worthwhile replacement (AGP interface)? I need something that will work with Windoze and Linux, mainly normal desktop stuff, but occasional bursts of gaming. I would prefer something that can rotate the display as my screen is a rotatable LCD type. I don't need megabuck cutting edge stuff.

Nvidia seems to get a lot of good mentions.
