LinuxQuestions.org - Is my sound card dead?

I just installed Mandrake 9.1 on my dual boot Win98 machine. Everything went fine, except for the soundcard. I have an Aureal Vortex 1 type card. Mandrake recognized it upon install, but sent me to Sourceforge.net to get drivers. I got the most recent drivers from the CVS, and when I typed make install, I got the following message:

"No Aureal Vortex soundcard detected!"

The README file says this about the error message:

You do not have an Aureal Vortex card in this computer or the card is dead. Check to make sure the soundcard is firmly in its slot.

You can manually specify the card you want to compile a module for by providing the appropriate option to 'make'.

Examples: make au8830
make au8820
make au8810

Note: It is doubtful that this will solve your problem. Your hardware is most likely to be the issue.

I would believe this, but Mandrake detected the soundcard, and Windows98 detects and uses the soundcard, so I tend to think there's some other issue going on here. Typing make au8820 gave me several hundred lines of error messages, so no luck there. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get this card working? Buying a new soundcard is an option, btw, but I'd like opinions on what kind to get ($30 or less).
