Exclamation Is (Linux) Ubuntu killing my hard drives?

Hello i have a Trashiba laptop that i have just had a hard drive replaced on because it had failed. I have had my laptop back for about 3 days when the hard drive failed again, and after running a Spinright scan i could tell that it was a goner. I have never had a drive die so quickly when running windows, is linux (Ubuntu) killing all my drives?

three days is so short that i would think it must be a drive defect. Even if it is over spinning or something that is really short.

No. Software cannot kill hardware. Worst case is that software kills other software and wipes out important data or the OS itself, but it won't affect the actual hardware.

Edit: tamoneya has a good point. If the unit is defective, it likely will appear sooner rather than later, and if the new disk dies after 3 days, it certainly sounds like it was defective, and that it would have failed with either Linux or Windows. The only other reasonable explanation for the failure would be if the laptop were dropped or otherwise mis-handled.

So long as the drive is under warranty you should be able to exchange it with another without any hassle. Good luck with it

An operating system cannot ruin a drive.
