Solved with 'brightnessctl'. Not exactly what I was looking for but the result is there, so it's all good for now

These are the commands for tweaking brightness via multimedia keys in my Xmonad config:

XF86XK_MonBrightnessDown: brightnessctl set 10%-

XF86XK_MonBrightnessUp: "brightnessctl set +10%
