I have an old pet trimmer than I use as my barber. If I overcharge it and shake the bejeezus out of it, it does great. Still cutting my hair a decade plus later. The key is to shake it. Probably not the best thing for a laptop.

NiCad used to disimprove if you only half discharged it before recharging. That said, it's capacity was lousy and it didn't last that long. A full drain and recharge got the capacity up - it was a chemical thing.

Today it's Lithium ion and others. Capacity is ~1000 recharges. The variation is what quality of whichever rare metal (e.g PD46 = palladium)is used will dictate how much capacity is left after the first 1000 charges. If you drain a lithium battery too flat, bad things happen (you kill it), so you're usually prevented from doing that.
