Is INTEL 2200 internal DSL modem compatible w/ LINUX?

Hey guys, I've got Qwest for my DSL, and I need to know if the INTEL 2200 internal DSL modem is compatible with Linux?
I'm running Mandrake 8.2
Thanks,
Jed

The last I checked there were virtually no drivers for internal DSL modems. I'm almost certain there are none in the kernel, so unless Intel has any posted, You'll probably have to grab an external, and a bit of forewarning, don't get a USB one, ethernet is mickey-mouse to set up compared to USB. Also, if someone tries to hype a USB modem as faster, giggle and point at them, the limitation is not in the interface, its in the phone line, as long as your NIC does 100Base-T, and even if it does 10Base-T you're losing a very small fraction.

Thanks a million, Finegan.
I didn't get the external because of this post - I got a Cisco 678 off Ebay for $150. That's a heck of a lot better deal than Qwest trying to sell for almost $300!
Anything I should know about setting up the Cisco for my Linux box? (Mandrake 8.2)
Thanks again,
Jed

Uh er, you mean you didn't get the internal right?

An external modem is external, brand-name doesn't matter, as long as it makes a connection, (you can tell through panel light combinations), you can get the connection off of it. Its all a matter of whether Qwest uses PPPoE, DHCP, or... yeah... I doubt it: a static.

All of these methods are rather painless, and well documented to mars and back, but I could answer a question on any of them if you like.

Luck,

Finegan

er. . . yeah, that's what I meant. :-) I didn't get the internal INTEL 2200. I got the external Cisco instead. Should be pretty painless, then, from Mandrake 8.2 (at least from what I've heard) to set up.
If I have any questions when I get it, I'll post here. Thanks again,
Jed

Intel 2200 drivers exist!

I'm working at Intel right now as a contractor, and have an Intel 2200 DSL modem (internal) that a buddy gave me. I asked one of the primary Linux developers at work about drivers. He said that a guy had worked on them, but they were never released. After I bugged this developer for a while, he sent an email to the guy about it. This was a week and a half ago, with no reply as of yet. I can't help but feel that I am close, though. :) I will advise this forum of my progress, as it came up first in my google for [linux driver "intel 2200"]...I intend to land these drivers!
