Is an external modem working?

Hi!

Can I buy any serial external modem and will it work under Linux?
I read this modem howto and just want to verify.

Thanks

Yes and No
In Most cases a External modem will work with most versions of Linux. However there are some External Modems (Best Data) External USB Modems come to mind that would not work. There are also some External Modems that are really Like a Win Modem and are not stand alone modems. Your best bet is to get a modem that is Linux compatable. or says on the Box that it will work with Linux. I use a Zoom 3049L External Modem and it works great. It is Linux compatable. uses the Lucent Chipset. Hope this helps you.

Any Hayes compatible **serial** (not usb) modem should work. They're very, very easy to install (the hardest part is plugging in all the cables). If you want USB, you'll have to do more research and probably a lot more work.
