iptable problem upon nic config
 

Hi all.
Im brand new to this forum and also to Linux .

Im running dual boot with RH 9 and Im trying to configure my network settings (using an ambit cable modem and a Netgear FA311 ethernet card).

The card is recognised by RH in the network configeration, and obtains a MAC address from the modem, but when I attempt to activate, it sits for a few minutes trying to activate, then the folllowing message appears:


Activating network device eth0
Determining IP info for eth0....iptables: No chain/target/match by that name failed.
IPtables; bad rule (does a matching rule excist in that chain?)

hrmm...sounds as if you are using DHCP to give the NiC an IP address. by the way, MAC addresses are set in your hardware, and so you always have one: the cable modem gives you an IP address via DHCP.

are you running any firewall. if so, what?

don't do much redhat, but if you check the config on the NiC it should be set to get an IP address dynamically by DHCP.

also, does the modem work from windoze, if you have it? (i am guessing it's an NTL connection you have, in which case you need to register the modem in windoze before using it under Linux)

Yup, its an NTL supplied CM (USB connected) and since theres no drivers around for it for Linux, had to splash out on an NIC card. Havent configured the card for windoze yet (only got it today so leaving USB as is for now).

No firewall set up for RH as yet, but still getting this error message (also appearing on boot up when running through set-up).

Yup, its set to DHCP.

Any ideas?

Got it sorted, just a matter of powering off the odem while linux boots, then powering it back on. Thanks for your help:)
