Intermittent USB Scanner Problem
Hi, I have a problem with my UMAX astra 2000U scanner. I have not been able to get it to work properly, it is sometimes recognized and sometimes not. After verifying that the scanner was supported (it said "minimum but should work"), I downloaded the appropriate back-end from the sane web site (umax1220u). I have upgraded to the latest version of libusb. I am running Kubuntu with a 2.6.15-26-386 kernel. Here are some things I have noticed:
Xsane almost always says no devices available, but sometimes it recognizes the scanner and says there is an i/o error. Quiteinsane gives the same response when it finds the scanner, but mostly it doesn't find it at all. Kooka usually recognizes the scanner but just hangs when I try to scan something. Here is some output from my toubleshooting: scanimage -L (in root and normal account) No scanners were identified....... #This isn't always the case, sometimes it finds it sane-find-scanner (root and normal account) No USB scanners found...... #is always like this lsusb Bus 001 Device 002: ID 1606:0030 Umax [hex] Astra 2000U #finds it allways In KInfoCenter (under usb devices) I get: UHCI host controller (1) Class 0 ((Defined at Interface level)) Subclass 0 Protocol 0 USB Version 1.00 Vendor ID 0x1606 (Umax [hex]) Product ID 0x30 (Astra 2000U) Revision 1.00 Speed 12 Mbit/s Channels 0 Max. Packet Size 0 ---------------------------------------------- What am I missing, any suggestions??? Thanks, Bryan |
Try running your scanner as root. I know that this is not recommended, but many scanners have permission problems. If your scanner runs as root, then you have to set the permissions to run as user.
Good Luck |
The results are the same with root in all of the scanner front ends and scanimage -L, sane-find-scanner. I've noticed that when the scanner is recognized it always has a device i/o error. Any other suggestions?

Check out the following links and see if they help, then post back:
http://linux.about.com/library/cmd/b...-umax1220u.htm http://www.fifi.org/cgi-bin/man2html...umax1220u.5.gz I can not test the scanner, so you will have to do the leg work. Good Luck |
