Interesting SuSE 10 issue...help???

I have installed suse 10 a few different times on my toshiba laptop. 4 actually. Two of the installs worked well. I was having wireless issues. acpi=off gave me wireless and ethernet access. The other 2 installs will only mount a cd or my flash drive if they are plugged in for boot up. Then they mount fine and I can do whatever I want. If I unplug it and plug it back in it shows up in my computer but unmounted. When I click mount nothing happens. Same with the cd rom. Can anyone shed some light on this. I have seen it work flawlessly. Then I reinstalled and it quit. Reinstalled again and it worked fine again. Reinstalled againand it quit. help please. thank you.

Out of curiosity, why the multiple re-installs over and over? Once you had a working one, why did you get rid of it?

I would say the best bet is once even a broken install is complete, post your issues as you have them so we can use logs and commands to track issues down. I would say logically, the explanation of differences upon install are due to settings variances in each case. Something must be being changed during the install. Not that that is a particularly helpful comment for explaining anything. There are a lot of options to set during install, but most things like hardware detection should be the same regardless of install.

So the problem i guess was an account issue. The reason for the multiple installs was becasue the first time the usb worked but not wireless. Wishfull thinking I guess. After that however I started logging in to the root account to change some settings. I never realized that was the problem. If I log in under the normal user account everything works. I assume lots of you guys already figured that out so sorry for asking such a noob question. The only thing I have to change is acpi=off in order to get both ethernet cards to work. Is there a way around this? Also does anyone know why the date always displays like 6 or 7 months off. The date and time change every time I reboot. It keeps the correct time in the yast panel but on the desktop it says its december 3. Other than these two minor issues I absolutely love it. I have been using all the bootable live discs that are out there. This is my first install of linux and I have to say I may convert. Thanks again to everyone who tries to help.

You can set the time properly, set it local instead of UTF then save to bios. If it is reverting after that, it is your motherboard battery, and you need a new one, they are only like a buck or 2.

Also in the clock control panel, check out that too.
