intellimouse issue; slackware 8.1

Just installed slackware 8.1 and my mouse is not working properly. The pointer responds erratically to mouse movement. Popup menus appear without clicking, and the pointer jumps around randomly. The slightest mouse movement usually sends the pointer to the top left corner of the screen.

This is a dual boot system with win98 and redhat 7.3. (triple boot ?) The mouse works with windows and redhat. It only give me fits in slackware.

I tried using the XF86config file from redhat but it didn't help. I also had the problem outside X. Running mc at runlevel three produced the same type of behaviour.

I'm open to suggestions

pico /etc/X11/XF86Config

Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
Option "Emulate3Buttons"
Option "Buttons" "5"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

If it's connected via PS/2, copy and paste my lines as root, re startx or reboot.

Worked like a charm. Now all I need to do is get dhcp, my sound card, and my printer working.
