intellimouse explorer 3.0 on linux

As the topic sais, I'm using intellimouse explorer 3.0 on redhat 9.0 running kde 3.2.1. When I goto the control center and goto configure the mouse, It just shows up as a regular 2 button mouse. How can I get the thumb buttons to work so when I'm browsing in Mozilla Firefox 0.8 that one of the buttons does "Forward" and one button does "Back". Thanks.

This web site describes how to supposedly set up the IntelliMouse Explorer with xfree:

However, I've tried the instructions on this site, but my mouse hasn't even been working correctly in the first place..
