Intel Wireless 2200 Mandrake 10.1 n00b problem

I have spent the past few weeks trying to configure my wireless card. I am getting closer, I have extracted the firmware to the right directory (I think) and now my only problem is when I try to make install with the drivers I get this
Code:

make -C /lib/modules/2.6.8.1-12mdk/build SUBDIRS=/home/paul/intel/ipw2200-0.18 MODVERDIR=/home/paul/intel/ipw2200-0.18 modules
make[1]: Entering directory `/lib/modules/2.6.8.1-12mdk/build'
make -C /lib/modules/2.6.8.1-12mdk/ SUBDIRS=/lib/modules/2.6.8.1-12mdk/build MODVERDIR=/lib/modules/2.6.8.1-12mdk/build modules
make[2]: Entering directory `/lib/modules/2.6.8.1-12mdk'
make[2]: *** No rule to make target `modules'.  Stop.
make[2]: Leaving directory `/lib/modules/2.6.8.1-12mdk'
make[1]: *** [modules] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/lib/modules/2.6.8.1-12mdk/build'
make: *** [modules] Error 2

Also another thing I have been wondering about is how to get the switch on the side of my laptop to turn on and off the adaptor.
