But when I connect working speakers to the PC and play an audio file, there is no sound! Who has an idea what I can do? I look forward to a constructive answer! Thanks!

Hello Installation2, & welcome to LQ.
Intel 82801 is an oldie - released 1999! Even the Northbridge/Southbridge designs are passé. They should still work.
Type 'sudo alsamixer' into a terminal and you should see a visualisation of a volume or volume controls. Check none are muted (shows MM) or move over any that are with the arrow keys and press 'm' to unmute.
in the desktop, click on the sound icon. You want it up and unmuted. Some weirdo sound devs imagined you'd explode your speakers, so silly as it sounds, there's a lot of muting done.
Lastly open pavucontrol. Play a sound file, and look for movement in the sound stream. See if you can enable or turn up sound under 'Playback' or 'Output Devices.'
Report back on that lot.

Thank you business_kid!
Now installing and using pavucontrol it works well!
I want to use this old PC and 2 more for 3 multi-monitor video installations about trash and waste. I know that there are still a few nice challenges waiting for me. But the basic idea is to make everything out of e-waste. The PCs and monitors are all working now. It will be interesting how I can tune the performance and display capabilities of these systems. I think it could be about the image resolution and low data rates ...
Again, thank you very much for this valuable little help!
All best

Fine. I'll warn you about video. - Nvidia come first, and have done for a long time.
- AMD/ATI/Radeon (Absent from linux support 2001-2007) are a distant second, although that distance has lessened in recent years.
- Intel come a distant third to, to the extent that they started putting AMD (formerly ATI) cores in their APUs because their own suck.
If my own experience is anything to go by,you will struggle synching speech. Keep your windows small. One other thing: RAM for old crocks is now a collector's item, and sold at inflated prices.

that's not why your having problems
you'll hear that bout new problems after they force you to upgrade, then they tell you upgrade ubuntu, they they tell you wait for the next update, then they say your hardware is depreciated, ...
IT'S CALLED HARDWARE WARS - and they are pretty hot on controlling you in the war
