I am interested in installing the intel video driver for my 845gl chipset.
After reviewing the included doc the only portion of the install that
worries me has to with ensuring that x windows is stopped. I am running
red hat 8.0 with x windows.How do i go about stopping x windows as far
as I can tell I don't have the option of running a terminal before
x is started? Is it possible to go into interactive startup and stop X or do I need to do something else?

Open up a terminal, any terminal, Konsole, gnome-term, xterm, and su up to root and then type:

init 3

That's just simple multiuser mode, the default runlevel of RedHat is 5, which is multiusermode with Xwindows.
