Unhappy intel 810 console resolution cannot be set

I have a Redhat 9 system (kernel2.4.20-31.9 from redhat rpm) my system uses intel 810 chipset with 1MB of shared memory. Whenever i set vga=say 771 in grub, it says that the mode is unsupported, and prompt me with a list of options. Even if i input the option number, it wil run for several seconds, and switch back to 80x25 mode in a blink. Anyone knows how to set it up properly so i can run it 800x600? thanks!
if additional informations are needed please leave message, i'd really want to know how to set it up. thanks!
