intel 536ep driver and kernel source

I have been working on an install of the 536ep driver in Mepis for several days.
I had good instructions for the actual opening of the driver in the correct place. That is done.

However, the instructions that I had were for Mandrake. there was one part that indicated that I needed to know my kernel source headers and gave urpmi as the place I should look. It does not say when I should or where I should install them.

Basically it said to use urpmi kernel source. After messing with that all day, "command not found", I discovered that Mepis does not use urpmi, instead had kpackage.
Fun
Anyway, I can fine the kernel just fine, but I will be dang to know what to do with that information.
When I try to open the driver with
Make 536 it does fine but ends with error 1 ***[check] , lib/modules...autoconf.h does not exist.

Make install also has error 1, cannot start Intel536.ko, no such file.

I assume this is all about the kernel source?
Why did I need to know Kernel heading, am I supposed to put them somewhere? WHERE?

Should I just get an external modem?
Bad day, but thanks for help
Ron
