intel 536ep

I'm running Suse 9.1 personal, and can't install my modem drivers. It is a "hardware" modem, and I have the drivers, I just can't seem to install them.
I know nothing, and I repeat ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about linux, this is the first time I have ever booted it up. I tried to follow the instuctions included with the drivers read me file, but "make" is not a valid command in my distro... so I'm very lost here,
Any patient geek has time to help me it would be appreciated....

That driver causes a lot of problems. Now and then someone gets it to work but usually it seems it's just a headache.

I got an old ISA modem to work. And external modems seem to work easily too, so I hear.

Okay so, is there a manual way to configure it? or do I just have to buy another modem, which would massively suck! I'm so over buying things... although I also have a pctel HSP56mr modem if that would be easier?

I fretted with one like you have for about three weeks, then I bought a US Robotics ISA modem on EBAY for $8.

I had to swap the jumpers on it to disable plug and play and mount it on /dev/ttyS1 (com2). Then it worked fine. I'm using it now.

ISA slots are fast going away on motherboards.

Web sites seem to say that external modems always work with Linux without any difficulty.

And of course it detect my ethernet card just fine, on any distro..... I'll just wait for dsl to arrive, this may take five years, but I'm so over buying modems
