Integrated Realtek 8139 problems w/gentoo
Well, I had no problems actually installing the Gentoo system - all went sweetly, and the network card worked just like I expected it to.
However, come to restart the system, and things are less rosy. I can configure an IP address/mask and default gateway, but no joy in terms of actually communicating with any other machines. The system is a Shuttle FX41 board with linux 2.4.20-gentoo-r5 running on it. There is no APIC support, as the processor does not support APIC. The network card module in use is the 8139too driver. I see the following entries in the log if I try to ping the default gateway (which does response to ICMP!). This includes loading the 8139too driver. Jul 5 14:01:01 [kernel] 8139too Fast Ethernet Driver 0.9.26 Jul 5 14:01:01 [kernel] eth0: RealTek RTL8139 Fast Ethernet at 0xd400, 00:30:1b:ae:f6:db, IRQ 15 Jul 5 14:01:13 [kernel] eth0: Setting 100mbps full-duplex based on auto-negotiated partner ability 45e1 Jul 5 14:01:37 [kernel] NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out. Any suggestions on how to get this to work? TIA, Aidan |
The answer? Don't enable ACPI in the kernel! Even having the APM driver loaded seems to cause problems if the machine drops into a lower power mode, which is annoying.
