Installing Winmodem
Hello people!I tried to install driver for my Lucent Winmodem and I got message that I need to insert Default lines in my /etc/modules.conf and the Defaul lines are:
cat /tmp/ltmodem/tmpfile.
Trouble is that I don't know how to do it cause I am a complete Linux Newbie. Please help!
Thanks, Djony!
P.S. I can dial the number with my modem on PPP Dial up, but I can't conect on Network.

As far as my limited knowledge goes (you could probably do it in command line by doing su>root password>enter> but after that I would be lost) so I would log out and back in as root, then open the file manager (konqueror for kde or nautilus for gnome) then serch for the /etc directory and then scroll down to find the modules.conf
right click on it, then using the dropdown, select "open with" (I use kde so I usually select "kwrite") once you've got it open in an editor, type in the line at the bottom, and save from the file dropdown, then quit.
Log back into your user acccount, and give it a try - that's how I would do it.
If it's not correct then could someone else suggest something? or maybe tell Djony how to do this quicker as command line?
regards
John

vi /etc/modules.conf
(vi meaning cli editor-of-your-choice)
Or, if that's supposed to be a literal line and it doesn't matter where in the file it is, something like
echo cat /tmp/ltmodem/tmpfile>/etc/modules.conf
though that might screw up because 'cat' is a command and the rest is a path. Would you put it in quotes to keep bash from trying to expand it? I dunno. But I'm just being silly there and not on my Linux to test it. The first one will do it.
edit - Oops. If you really have no idea, Djony, try 'which mcedit' or 'which nano' (or 'locate mcedit', etc.) to see if you have those and, if you do, use one of those. Those are simple text editors. Doesn't do you much good to tell you 'editor of your choice' if you don't know which to choose, and you probably don't want vi. *g*
