Installing video drivers, slackware 10.0

Hello, i am here because i am trying to install intell 82582 GM video drivers for my laptop. I found the drivvers at intel... But when i tryed to install rpm -i --force --nodeps dri-I915-v1.1-20041217.i386.rpm, it gave me out an error about not being able to compile the kernel. I used nodeps because it complains for sh.

Thank you for your time

If it complains about no kernel, it means those drivers(like most) need the kernel installed to compile themselves according to your kernel. You will need to install the kernel source, which usually is located around the /usr/src area, or around there. Your install media should be able to install that for you, because you don't really want to use the ones for the wrong kernel, could be very bad.

I didn't understand. , you are telling me that i have to extract the source and put it somewhere so that this installer package reads it?

No, you don't extract anything. You copy the source from the install media to where it needs to go- usually you can just select to install from the media a package like "Linux Kernel- Devel" or "Linux Kernel Source." It will know where it should go.

But for all driver installs, this source is nessecary because drivers need to know how to configure the hardware for the version of the kernel you have.

Does slackware allow you to keep source during install? Or do you have the option of using a package manager to install the source from the media? I am not familiar enough with Slackware specifically to tell you how to go about installing the source, just familiar enough with linux to know you have to.

That is it. It installs the source(aka copies it) into a directory. But depending on your distro, it does not have to be /usr/src, which is common, however.

Ok... Let me get this straight. Kernel source is at /usr/src/linux-2.4.29. Now why is it that when i do rpm -i driver.rpm, it complains for kernel not available? It's not exactly "kernel not available" it says something else. LIke cannot compile it.

was your original issue, which drivers needing the kernel commonly give that error. Has the error changed? Or can you copy paste the exact error message?
