Installing USB/Ethernet device in Linux DSL & Linux general

Hi-

I was trying to install a USB/Ethernet adaptor into Linux DSL, but don't have a clue where to start and what is the general installation procedure in Linux. There is no documentation available although I know it's Linux compatible as there's a file for linux in the cd.

If I do this in Windows, I would install the device, the hardware wizard will come up and I can select the file from the CD Rom, but what's the procedure for Linux DSL & Ubuntu?

Also does anyone know if the external adaptor would automatically generate an ip address (ie. is there anything else I would need to do?).

Thanks

I used to use the Sitecom usb network adaptor. No driver installation was required. It might be different under DSL. Plug it in then fire up your pc/laptop and test if the adaptor is setup and working.

These commands may help:

lsusb - Lists usb ports and any hardware connected to them.

ifconfig - Lists ethernet ports
