Installing to external HDD then swapping with internal?

So I sat down to install my shiny HDD that came today to find that one of the screws on the panel of by 2090 was to tight and stripped. I called them, and likely i'll have a new panel sent to me, so i can break the one on my laptop.

The question is however, can I put my new HDD in an enclosure, boot to it, and install XP and Ubuntu, then the new HDD with the old one when I can? Will this creat problems?

As long as you don't change the order of the drives, it shouldn't be a problem. Even then, there are ways of fixing it with a LiveCD.
