Installing SUSE 10.1 on a Tyan Tomcat board - GRUB READ ERROR ISSUES

I'm trying to install SUSE 10.1 on a new Tyan Tomcat board.

Everything seems to go fine - brand new hard drive, etc.. but when SUSE goes for its initial boot, I get a GRUB Stage 1.5 GRUB READ ERROR.

What's odd is that the drive is brand new. I've tried several times to install it, even switching to another new drive... and even trying to boot the machine off another machine's SUSE 10.1 hard drive (in that case, I had built it on a Tyan Tiger dual Opteron motherboard). But that drive, which runs fine on the Tiger board, throws a GRUB READ ERROR as well..

Not sure what the problem is - I've done this same installation (10.1 DVD / conventional installation) on about 8 machines now and this is the only one that has thrown this error. The only difference appears to be the Tomcat board (SK 939) vs the dual-proc S940 Tyan and ASUS boards..

I've cleared the CMOS on the Tomcat but nothing seems to work

I can run linux rescue from the SUSE 10.1 DVD - and I can see the drive..

Any advice?

Thanks

Chris

Since the drive works when connected to another mobo, but not when connected to the new one, I'd have to suggest the possibility of a bad chip on the new mobo. Telling point is that you've tried more that one drive on the same new mobo.

To determine if it a bad memory chip, run memtest86 from the dvd.

If it's some other chip, I don't know what tests to run. You'd probably have to take the board to a computer shop to run diagnostics.

Thanks - I'll check into it - I was thinking that perhaps there was some jumper that wasn't set right but the drive is there during the install and everything shows up in SUSE under the configuration screen - it's just that it fails to boot after one goes though the whole installation process....

Very strange

Fixed the problem - turned out that it was a bad primary IDE channel - I just moved everything to the secondary channel and it all seems fine... weird...
