Installing Slave IDE Hard Drive Problems

Ok,

Now I have an issue that I am sure can be easily remedied...... but I just do not have the smarts to do it.

I put a new 80 GB Maxtor IDE Hard Drive (unformatted) in my SuSE x86_64 box after taking out my old 5 GB slave drive. On reboot, SuSE starts to load, but almost immediately after the splash screen, I get a command line interface that says something about an unexpected change in the configuration (I expected that) and I need to configure it before it will reboot to the GUI again.

I am sure that this is all due to the unpartitioned disk as well as the fstab file not being correct for this new drive. I really want to know what I have to do (commands to use) to get the disk recognized and formatted (reiserfs) so that I can use it and get my GUI interface back.

If only it would boot up properly, I could use the format and partition tool and I'd be back in business......

Thanks so much!

Barney

What was on this drive? If it wasn't one of the system partitions, such as /boot or /usr, then you can get into the rescue mode, and comment out the lines in /etc/fstab that contain this drive. After that, you should be able to boot up normally, and use the YaST partitioner to format the new drive.

Thanks for your reply! I just used the 5 GB drive for storage. It has two partitions on it that has simple GIFs and things like that. No system partitions that I know of........ The 80 GB drive is completely empty and unformatted (new).

Here is my fdisk:

Disk /dev/hda: 20.4 GB, 20490559488 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 2491 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 764 6136798+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda2 765 2491 13872127+ 5 Extended
/dev/hda5 765 904 1124518+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/hda6 905 2491 12747546 83 Linux

Disk /dev/hdb: 10.1 GB, 10110320640 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 1229 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdb1 * 1 910 7309543+ 83 Linux
/dev/hdb2 911 1229 2562367+ f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/hdb5 911 1229 2562336 83 Linux

The /dev/hdb2 would be the current 5 GB disk in question...
Thanks!

Barney

Make it easier and put the drive back in - then see where it is mounted and comment it out in /etc/fstab as suggested
If you have another cable to additionally connect the new drive - just do it and from your working system partition and format it - then replace the drive.
